The Texas Police Star: No police layoffs in El Paso
EL PASO — In a stunning reversal of fortunes for officers in El Paso, CLEAT and the El Paso Municipal Police Officers Association have won a major political/economic victory where recently city leaders were demanding officers accept reductions in pay and benefits or face layoffs beginning Sept. 1.
In a “our way or the highway” strategy, the City demanded an opening of the collective bargaining contract with the demand that officers accept wage reductions. When the rank and file members of the El Paso Municipal Police Officers Association voted not to accept the reductions in pay, the City of El Paso announced plans to furlough each El Paso police offi- cer for three days during the calendar year beginning Sept. 1.
