Public Affairs
Far more than most other workers, law enforcement professionals must develop
and exert political influence to maintain control over their future. This
means organization, effective unions and informed, responsible and assertive
political action. In addition to its union and collective bargaining activities,
CLEAT has taken the lead in influencing both political races and important
legislation across the state.
- Our Political Action Committee (PAC) assists candidates
who support law enforcement. We provide expert political assistance to
local associations, and encourage our locals to support and endorse candidates.
Many CLEAT locals have successfully helped council members, county commissioners
and state legislators win hotly contested campaigns. CLEAT’s state-wide
political program has been a key factor in the election of Texas governors,
lieutenant governors, attorneys general, legislators and judges.

- Our legislative efforts ensure that law enforcement
professionals have a loud and clear voice in Austin. Our success in the
Texas Legislature is unsurpassed by any other law enforcement organization,
and is distinguished by a series of important victories in a diverse range
of issues, including:
- health care for retirees
- increased line-of-duty death benefits for the families of slain officers
- civil service arbitration
- elimination of police residency requirements
- state-wide jurisdiction for peace officers
- expansion of the right to bargain with the public employer
- limited use of the polygraph during internal investigations
- state-financed disability income for officers injured in the line
of duty
- crackdown on phone solicitations made by unscrupulous law enforcement
organizations and promoters.
