TRAINING OPTION 1: Occupation Under Siege
Dr John Violanti
All-Day Training for 8 TCOLE Hours
Strategies for police officers to manage stress and avoid burnout or worse.
Covid-19, George Floyd, BLM, and the “Defund the Police” movement have created an environment that has caused police officers to retire in droves. The inability to hire new law enforcement officers has led to unprecedented understaffing and mandatory overtime. Politicians have sought to reform the police and politically expedient district attorneys are indicting officers every chance they get. In a profession where stress has already been proven a factor that dramatically affects the health of those doing the job, how do officers survive with all of these added stressors?
Dr. John Violanti conducted some of the first groundbreaking research into the effects of stress on police officers and how it impacts an officer’s health. This research led to legislation that CLEAT drafted and passed in 2019. SB 1582 provides a line of duty presumption for heart attacks and strokes.
During this class, Dr. Violanti will discuss his research related to stress, PTSD, suicide, and burnout. In addition, Dr. Violanti will address how officers’ lives have been impacted by the added stressors in today’s environment.
He will offer a number of strategies departments and officers can use to combat stress, burnout, and PTSD before it leads to the end of an officer’s career or worse.
