CLEAT Backs Motion to Dismiss Charges Against Austin Officer Chance Bretches
AUSTIN, TX—This afternoon, a motion to dismiss was filed in the case against Austin Police Officer Chance Bretches. The motion highlights the Travis County District Attorney’s ongoing and deliberate efforts to wrongfully prosecute law enforcement officers who respond to civil discourse.
During the course and scope of his duties, Officer Bretches engaged in lawful use of force while acting within the law and in accordance with his training. The motion also describes a new level of incompetence and inherent bias by the Travis County District Attorney’s Office against the law enforcement profession, including withholding evidence from the defense counsel that acknowledges the massive failures at every level above the officer, including the City of Austin.
“It is truly shameful that District Attorney Jose Garza has weaponized the criminal justice system in Travis County against our brave men and women in law enforcement,” says Robert Leonard, CLEAT Executive Director. “CLEAT stands firmly in support of our member and the motion, and will continue to provide him with the best legal defense possible.”
